Add reverb to audio online

To add reverb, open your file, choose Effects ▸ Delay Effects ▸ Reverb…, pick a preset such as Small Room or Concert Hall, set the Mix and apply it. Tick Include tail so the reverb can fade out naturally. Auditius does it in your browser for free, and nothing is uploaded.

How to add reverb, step by step

The Reverb window opens as soon as your file has loaded.

  1. Click Open a file to add reverb, or use File ▸ Open… (Ctrl+O), and choose your audio file.
  2. Select the part that needs reverb, or leave nothing selected to process the whole file.
  3. Open Effects ▸ Delay Effects ▸ Reverb… and choose a preset: Small Room, Concert Hall, Cathedral or Plate.
  4. Set Mix, the balance between the original and the reverb. The default is 30%; 10 to 20% is often enough for a voice.
  5. Tick Include tail if the reverb should keep ringing after the selection ends.
  6. Press Preview, adjust while it loops, then click OK.
  7. Save the result with File ▸ Save As….

The Reverb controls

Each preset is a set of values for these five controls, so you can start from one and fine-tune it.

  • Decay Time (0.2 to 10 s): how long the reverb lasts. Short for rooms, long for halls and churches.
  • Decay Curve (1 to 8): how the tail dies away within that time. Higher values make it fade sooner, for a tighter sound.
  • High Damping (0 to 1): how much the highs soften as the tail fades, like a room with curtains and carpets.
  • Pre-Delay (0 to 200 ms): a short gap before the reverb starts, which keeps a voice clear in front of it.
  • Mix (0 to 100%): the balance between the dry and the reverberated sound. At 100% you hear only the reverb.

Keep the decay with Include tail

Reverb keeps sounding after the source stops. Without Include tail, that decay is cut off at the end of the selection, which is most noticeable on the last word or note of a file. With it ticked, Auditius renders the decay after the selection and inserts it, pushing any later audio to the right. Next to the checkbox, the window shows how long the tail can be.

For a room you can shape yourself, try Effects ▸ Delay Effects ▸ Echo Chamber…, which models a room from its width, length, height and wall absorption, with presets such as Living Room and Tiled Bathroom. It offers Include tail too.

Reverb in the multitrack: track racks and buses

In the Multitrack view, reverb can be a real-time effect that leaves your files untouched. Click the fx button on a track header, or right-click it and choose Track Effects…, pick Reverb in the list and click Add Effect. You can change its settings while the session plays.

To share one reverb between several tracks, use a bus. Choose Edit ▸ Insert Bus, open the bus effects with its fx button and add Reverb with Mix at 100%. Then, in each track’s effects window, click Add Send under Routing, choose the bus and set the send level. More send means more reverb on that track.

When you export with File ▸ Export Mixdown…, File ▸ Mixdown Tail ▸ Auto (until effects decay) lets the last reverb fade out instead of cutting it.

Frequently asked questions

Why is the reverb cut off at the end of my audio?

Because its decay goes past the end of the selection. Undo with Ctrl+Z, open Reverb again and tick Include tail, which adds the decay after the selection.

How much reverb should I add to a voice?

Less than you might think. Start with Small Room and lower Mix to 10 to 20%. A Pre-Delay of 10 to 30 ms helps the voice stay clear.

Does adding reverb change the length of my file?

Only with Include tail ticked: the tail is inserted after the selection, so the file grows by up to the time shown next to the checkbox. Without it, the length stays the same.

How do I put the same reverb on several tracks?

Create a bus with Edit ▸ Insert Bus, add Reverb to it with Mix at 100% and send each track to it from Routing in its Track Effects window.

Can Auditius remove reverb from a recording?

No, there is no tool to remove room reverb. Effects ▸ Amplitude ▸ Noise Gate… can shorten the decay in the pauses between phrases, but it cannot take the room out of the words themselves.
