How to compress an audio file

You can start from WAV, MP3, FLAC, M4A/AAC, OGG or WebM, and even from the audio track of a video.

  1. Click Choose an audio file, or drop the file onto the dashed area.
  2. Pick Target size (MB) to set how big the result should be, or Bitrate (kbps) to choose the quality yourself.
  3. Check the estimate under the controls: it shows the expected size and bitrate before you convert.
  4. Click Compress audio and then Download to save the MP3.

Target size or bitrate?

Both modes produce an MP3 with a constant bitrate. The difference is how you make the choice.

  • Target size (MB) is for limits: messaging apps, email attachments or upload forms. The tool works out the highest bitrate that fits.
  • Bitrate (kbps) is for quality: 64 to 96 kbps suits speech, 128 to 192 kbps suits music, and 320 kbps keeps the most detail.
  • If even 64 kbps cannot meet your target, the estimate tells you the smallest possible size instead of pretending it will fit.

What compression can and cannot do

  • MP3 is lossy: smaller files always mean some loss of detail. Keep the original if you will edit the audio again.
  • The result is always MP3, the most compatible format for sharing. For smaller lossless files, the full editor exports FLAC.
  • Converting an already compressed file to a higher bitrate does not improve it; it only makes it bigger.
  • Everything runs on your device, so there is no upload limit, but very long recordings need enough memory.

Need to trim or clean the audio too?

The full editor can cut the parts you do not need, reduce background noise, normalize the volume and export in several formats. Often a shorter, cleaner recording beats a more compressed one.

Frequently asked questions

How do I get an audio file under 8 MB?

Load the file, keep Target size (MB) selected, type 8 and compress. The tool picks the highest bitrate that fits, and the estimate shows the expected result before you download.

Why is my result larger than the target?

Because 64 kbps is the lowest bitrate offered. If your audio is long, even that may exceed the target; the estimate warns you and shows the smallest size possible.

Can I compress audio without losing quality?

Not with MP3. Lossy compression always discards some detail, although at 192 kbps or more most listeners hear little difference on typical material. For lossless size reduction, use FLAC in the full editor.

Does it work with voice recordings from my phone?

Yes, in the formats your browser can decode, which usually includes M4A, MP3, WAV and WebM. If a file does not open, try a current Chrome, Edge or Firefox.

Do you keep a copy of my audio?

No. The file is read, compressed and encoded on your own device. Nothing is uploaded or stored anywhere else.
