How to normalize a recording

Normalization applies one gain to the whole file, so it does not change the balance between channels or compress loud and quiet passages differently.

  1. Choose an audio file.
  2. Enter a target peak from -30 to 0 dB; -1 dB leaves a little headroom.
  3. Select Normalize audio, listen to the result and download the WAV.

What normalization does not change

It does not remove noise, repair clipping already present in the recording or make every sentence equally loud. The channels are adjusted together and DC offset is removed before calculating the gain.
