How to extract audio from a video

Works with MP4, MOV and WebM files, and with any other video format your browser can decode. The original video stays untouched.

  1. Click Choose a video above, or drag the file onto the dashed area.
  2. Wait a moment while the audio track is read. You will see its length and the file size.
  3. Choose the MP3 bitrate: 320 kbps is selected by default for the best available quality.
  4. Click Convert to MP3, listen to the result if you like, and click Download to save the MP3.

Which bitrate should you choose?

The bitrate sets how much data each second of audio uses, so it controls both quality and file size.

  • 128 kbps: voice notes, lectures and podcasts, when a small file matters more than fidelity.
  • 192 kbps: music and general use, with a good balance of quality and size.
  • 256 kbps: a little extra headroom for music that will be edited or re-encoded later.
  • 320 kbps: the default and highest available quality, producing larger files.
  • A higher bitrate cannot improve the original: if the video already has low-quality sound, the MP3 will not sound better.

Things to know before converting

  • Only local files: no links here. Online videos must be saved to your device first, and you should only convert content you own or have permission to use.
  • Format support depends on your browser. MP4 with AAC audio is the most reliable; current Chrome, Edge and Firefox give the best results.
  • Very large videos may not fit in memory, because the file is decoded in full before encoding. Shorter clips work everywhere.
  • The conversion is lossy. Keep the original video if you need the best possible quality later.

Want to edit the audio first?

Open the full editor to trim the clip, remove noise, adjust the volume or add effects before exporting. The editor also converts between WAV, FLAC, MP3 and Ogg Vorbis, and can handle multitrack mixes.

Frequently asked questions

Can I paste a YouTube link?

No. This tool only converts video files already on your device. It does not download anything from the internet, and you should only extract audio from content you own or have rights to use.

Which video formats work best?

MP4 files with AAC audio are the safest choice, and WebM with Opus also works in current browsers. If a file fails, try another browser before assuming the video is broken.

Does converting change my original video?

No. The tool reads your video and creates a separate MP3 file. The original is never modified.

Why is my MP3 bigger than expected?

MP3 size follows the bitrate and the length of the audio: at 192 kbps each minute is about 1.4 MB. Choose 128 kbps for a smaller file.

Is my video uploaded anywhere?

No. Decoding and MP3 encoding run on your own device, inside the browser tab. Nothing is sent to a server.
